License key for local / staging / development environment. Multi-store licensing.

Seeing "license key is invalid" / "license domain X does not match current domain Y"?


License the root (registrable) domain, not a deep host. The license check reduces whatever host your store runs on down to its root domain and validates against that — so a key bound to a full multi-level host (e.g. dev-m2.shop.dev23.yourdomain.com) fails, while a key on the root (yourdomain.com) covers that root and every subdomain under it automatically. The error names the domain to use: it reads ... does not match current domain Y, and Y is exactly the root to license. Go to account.weltpixel.com → My Products → Update Licensed Domain, enter Y, and save. (Do not change your Magento base URL or any Magento configuration to fix this — the fix is in the account portal.)


One exception: when Y is not your domain. The check keeps only the last two labels of the host. A dev host like www.gartenmoebel.de.test therefore reduces to de.test, and your own brand label is discarded. Licensing de.test would validate, but it is not your domain and it would replace your production licence while it is set. In that case, restructure the dev hostname so your brand label lands in the last two labels: use de.gartenmoebel.test and at.gartenmoebel.test instead of gartenmoebel.de.test and gartenmoebel.at.test. Both reduce to gartenmoebel.test, which a licence on gartenmoebel.de accepts, and the leading label still separates your store views.



1. Licensed domain


WeltPixel products can be installed on up to 5 subdomains of the licensed domain for testing purposes, including those ending in .local, .localhost, .localdev, .dev, .development, .staging, .stage, or .test. A single license covers all installations.


You can install locally or on another Magento instance and use the same license key generated for the licensed domain.



2. Licensing for local, staging, and development environments


Example: Licensed domain = https://www.yourdomain.com


You can use the same license key for:



Note (IP addresses are not supported): Do not license a bare IP address. The portal will accept a full IPv4 address such as 11.22.33.44 and issue a key for it, but the license check reduces the address to its last two octets (33.44) before comparing, so the key never validates on your install. It looks like it worked in the portal and then fails on the store. IPv6 is not supported either, and a bare hostname with no TLD (such as localhost on its own) is not accepted. Use one of the dev-domain patterns above for local environments.


Note (Cloudways is not covered): cloudwaysapps.com staging URLs are not an accepted pattern in any form. A Cloudways staging environment needs the Update Licensed Domain workflow below, the same as any other unsupported pattern.


Note (what you can paste): The Update Licensed Domain field strips a leading https:// or http://, a leading www., and any trailing slash for you, so you can paste the URL straight from your browser bar.


Note (multiple servers): For multiple servers, use DNS records to point different subdomains of the licensed domain to separate servers.



3. Update Licensed Domain (self-serve)


You can change your licensed domain at any time, switching between dev, staging, and production as often as you need.


  1. Go to account.weltpixel.com → My Products.
  2. Find the product whose license you want to update.
  3. Click Update Licensed Domain.
  4. Enter the root domain — e.g. yourdomain.com, not dev-m2.shop.dev23.yourdomain.com. If you are fixing a validation error, enter the exact value from its current domain Y field.


A new license key is generated immediately and covers that root plus every subdomain under it. Each update generates a new key, and the previous key stops working on its old domain.


If you need dev and production licensed at the same time on two different root domains, that is not a second purchase. Contact us through the WeltPixel Support Center and we will add the extra domain to your existing plan.



4. Multi-store / multi-domain licensing


If used on the same Magento installation, you can run the product on unlimited domains for different store views. You only need to license the domain associated with the Magento Admin.


Example:



License the main admin domain (e.g., www.yourdomain.com/admin).



5. Using temporary domains


  • a. License the temporary domain. You can change your licensed domain later in your weltpixel.com account, using the workflow in section 3.
  • b. Use a subdomain of your licensed domain. Instead of the hosting provider’s temporary domain, assign a subdomain like dev.domain.com or staging.domain.com. The license will work on all test environments, with no domain switching needed.



6. Licensing under an agency domain


  • a. Agencies can purchase a separate license for their domain and use it for client staging environments (e.g., staging-client1.agency.com).
  • b. Alternatively, license under the agency domain temporarily, then transfer to the client’s production domain later.
  • c. Agencies can also license staging/development environments using the rules from sections 1–5 above.



7. Licensing on Magento Cloud


From version 1.7.3 (August 23, 2018) onward, Magento Cloud subdomains are supported. Use the production domain’s license key for integration branches.



If you face issues, ensure you’re using product version 1.7.3 or newer.



8. Licensing if purchased from Magento Marketplace


If you purchased through Magento Marketplace or another reseller, and a license is required:


  1. Create an account on weltpixel.com.
  2. Send a request via the WeltPixel Support Center with:
    • Marketplace name
    • Order number
    • Buyer name and email
    • Product purchased
    • Email used for your weltpixel.com account (ensure your account includes a complete billing address)


Once verified, the product will be assigned to your weltpixel.com account, allowing you to generate the license key.



9. Licensing multiple domains on the same Magento installation


In multi-store or multi-website setups running on the same Magento instance, you only need to license the backend domain. The product will then work across all associated frontend domains.
